When snowboarding, which foot goes in front?
Updated: Jul 20, 2020
Do you ride regular, goofy, or a bit of both?
If you ride with your left foot forward, you have a regular stance. Regular stance leaves your right foot in the back to control the board.
If you ride with your right foot forward, you have a goofy stance, leaving your left foot in the back to guide.
There are a few easy ways to test which stance you are.
Start with the slide test! All you need is a hard floor and a pair of socks. Carefully take a few quick steps forward and slide, which way do your feet naturally fall? Depending on which foot is forward, this is likely your snowboarding stance. Obviously there is an inherent risk in doing this so wear a helmet!
Another easy test is the pull test. If you wrap a rope around something and go to pull on it, how are your feet positioned? Left foot forward or right foot forward? This isn't perfect science, but a good indicator of how you would stand on your snowboard.

Do you skateboard or surf? How you stand on either of those boards is how you will be comfortable standing on a snowboard.

The last way on our list is the stair test. Simply take a step up a flight of stairs. The leg that you lead with is usually the leg that is in the rear while riding.

Does it really matter if you ride regular or goofy? Nope. No matter whether you lead with your left or right leg they will both be able to perform the necessary functions on a snowboard equally. Being able to ride both regular and goofy comfortably comes with a great advantage though. There is constant benefits to switching back and forth whether it is on the slopes doing some all mountain riding or running park laps, especially if the switch is unintentional, it might just save you from a fall!
